John Lawton Berry was born in 1905 and received his technical education at Newton Heath Technical School.

Following his apprenticeship with the Crossley Motor Company, he obtained further experience at Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Co., the Zenith Engineering Company, and the Devonshire Garage, Manchester.

In 1936 he became Works Foreman of Anderson's Garage, Manchester, for a short period, and joined the Halsbury Motor Co. as Service Engineer early in 1937.

In 1938 he became Supervisor in charge of fitting and assembly with the British Manufacture and Research Co., Ltd.

He was killed in an accident on 26th October, 1941, at the age of 36.

He was elected a Post-Graduate in 1936 and transferred to Associate Member in 1940.
