"JOHN MACQUEEN. M.B.E., B.Sc., whose death in his eighty-seventh year occurred on 18th February 1951, was a Member of the Institution for half a century, having been elected in 1901. He was educated at the Glasgow High School and Glasgow University, where he graduated B.Sc. in engineering in 1883. His apprenticeship was served with John Elder and Company, Ltd. (later the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Ltd.), Govan, from 1883 to 1888, after which he was employed in the drawing office. In 1898 he went to London, where he was appointed assistant engineering works manager by Yarrow and Company, Ltd. He returned to Scotland when the firm's works were transferred to the present premises at Scotstoun. His final position, which he held for twenty-one years until his retirement in 1932, was that of works manager to Denny and Company, Ltd., Dumbarton, shipbuilders."
