John Mawson (c1816-1867) of Mawson and Swan

Originally from Penrith, he was pharmacist who moved to Newcastle

c.1816 Born Westmorland[1]

c.1839 established a manufacturing chemists business in Newcastle

c.1844 Joseph Swan joined the business

1864 Took his brother-in-law, Joseph Swan, into partnership as Mawson and Swan. They had worked together for some twenty years previously

1867 Died in an explosion caused by the photographic chemicals he produced (nitroglycerin); his wife Elizabeth took over the running of the business.
