JOHN MONKHOUSE CARTMELL was the son of the late Isaac Cartmell, City Treasurer of Carlisle.

He served his apprenticeship apprenticeship with Messrs. Cowans and Sheldon of Carlisle and after further experience with Messrs. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company of Newcastle-on-Tyne, went to sea as an engineer and obtained a Board of Trade certificate.

Eventually, about forty years ago, he went to Glasgow to commence practice as a consulting engineer and agent.

He died on 28th February 1930 at the age of 70 years, and he had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1901.
