John Scale
John Scale (1736/7-1793)
By 1772 was working for Matthew Boulton at Soho. In February he wrote to Boulton that he had finished the inventory of vases, candlesticks, etc[1]
1776 Reported to Boulton on the latest results that Watt had achieved in developing a vacuum, as well as describing state of business in silver, etc.
1778 Suggested to Boulton that he needed more people able to work on erecting engines.
1781 Became a partner with Matthew Boulton in the Soho Manufactory after the dissolution of the partnership with John Fothergill.
1790 Boulton and Scale deposited a bill for £100 with Z. Walker in Birmingham.[2]
1793 George Scale was reporting to Boulton about the state of the button business.
1796 Boulton and Scale was succeeded by M. Boulton and Button Co
1801 John Scale Junior wrote to Matthew Boulton from Aberdare Ironworks, near Cardiff. "When we began to erect our works here it was with the intention of confining ourselves for some time to our blast furnace, with a machine capable of blowing two. About 12 months ago Messrs. Thompson Firman and Homfrey of London offered us a loan to build a second furnace and we accepted their offer …"[3]
