1816 Born in Hollinwood[1]. Baptised in Blackburn, son of John Sellars and his wife Mary[2]

1840 John was a book-keeper of Miles Platting. Birth of son John Carrington Sellars[3]

1850 Dissolution of the Partnership between John Sellars, Richard Johnson, and William Johnson, carrying on business as Gum and Starch Manufacturers, at Manchester, under the firm of John Sellars and Company. All debts due and owing to and by the said concern will be received and paid by the said John Sellars, by whom the said business will be carried on as heretofore.[4]

1851 Manufacturer of gum and starch; employer of 11 men; living in Newton, Manchester, with Eliza Sellars 40, Caroline Frances Sellars 15, John Sellars 11[5]

1855 Patent by John Sellars, of the firm of John Sellars and Co., of Monsall House, near Manchester, Starch and Gum Manufacturer, in respect of the invention of "improvements in the manufacture of starch, and in the use of substances employed therein."[6]

1859 Patent by John Sellars, of the city of Manchester, Manufacturing Chemist, for the invention of "improvements in the manufacture of size for stiffening, finishing, and dressing woven fabrics and yarns."[7]
