John Sorby

The following is condensed from an excellent article, 'Sorby: A Famous Sheffield Tool Making Family' by Geoffrey Tweedale[1]:-
John Sorby was born at Attercliffe, Sheffield, on 14 December 1755, the son of John and Hannah Sorby. He died in 1829. John Sorby and Sons was founded in 1780 according to trade catalogues. In 1791, he used a hanging sheep as his trade mark. He was a partner in Sorby, Hobson and Sorby brother Thomas. He became Master Cutler in 1806. In about 1816, with the addition of John Sorby (1786-1861) and Henry Sorby (1790-1846), became John Sorby and Sons (I.H.S.). In 1808, John Jun. registered a thistle trade mark.
