John Tilley

From Graces Guide

John Tilley of Whitechapel was an itinerant glass blower

1813 He wrote a letter, published in the the Transactions of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, describing a hydro-pneumatic blow-pipe that he had invented for use by chemists, glass-blowers, enamellers, assayers, etc. The invention enabled him to produce a constant stream of (slightly) pressurised air which could be directed so as to improve the flame used by the glass blower, or whoever[1].

Tilley was voted 15 guineas by The Society for his communications; they retained a copy of the device; the Society also published a detailed description of its use.
