JOHN WILLIAM BOTTOMLEY was responsible for many improvements and patents in clay-working machinery, of which he had had a wide experience both as a director of Messrs. Thos. C. Fawcett and during extensive business travel abroad.

He was born at Leeds in 1862 and appointed works manager by Messrs. Pullan, Tuke and Company, brickworks engineers of Leeds, at the age of 22.

After remaining in this position for six years he joined Messrs. Thos. C. Fawcett as engineer representative, and became a director of the firm three years later.

Twenty-five years ago he was instrumental in forming the Barnsley Metallic Brick Company, holding the position of chairman until his death on 8th January 1929.

Mr. Bottomley became a Member of the Institution in 1899.
