JOHN WILLIAM HEPWORTH was born in Leeds on 5th August 1843.

His father, John Hepworth, was connected with the design and construction of the "Great Eastern" steamship.

In 1871 the subject of this Memoir received an appointment as Foreman Boilermaker in the Indian Marine Dockyard at Bombay, but on the completion of his agreement he retired from the Government service and commenced the business partnership of Messrs. Alcock, Ashdown and Hepworth. He remained in India as Manager and Secretary of this firm till his retirement in 1910.

His death took place on 23rd September 1922, at the age of seventy-nine.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1900.
