"JOHN WILSON REID was connected with the timber and sawmill industry during most of his professional career, much of which was spent in India and Siam. He was born in 1879 and educated at Stanley House, Bridge-of-Allan, and Regent Street Polytechnic, London. He served an apprenticeship between 1892 and 1899 with J. Davey and Son, Stirling, and the Southgate Engineering Company, Ltd., London, with which firm he continued as assistant manager for a further two years. He was then employed by the Westinghouse Brake Company, Ltd., on electromagnetic railway signalling apparatus. In 1904 Mr. Reid went to India to take up the appointment of engineer and manager to the Trichur Timber and Saw Mills Company, Ltd., on the Malabar Coast. After holding this position for eight years he became manager of the Anglo-Siam Corporation's teak mills at Bangkok, where he remained until 1922. From 1923 to 1934 he was manager of the Clyde Saw Mills, Glasgow. Mr. Reid, whose death occurred on 25th May 1951, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1902."
