'In the 1820s John and Thomas Johnson took over their father's soap works and by the 1830s were manufacturing sulphuric acid works expanded eventually becoming known as Runcorn Soap and Alkali Company and by 1840 Runcorn was the third largest soap producer in country.'[1]
