JOSE FRANCISCO MARTINS-GUIMARAES was born at Campos, Rio State, on the 3rd July, 1876, of Brazilian parents.
He entered the Naval Academy in 1893 as a cadet, and distinguished himself by gaining the Greenhalgh gold medal. He was promoted midshipman in 1897, lieutenant in 1899, lieutenant-captain in 1902, and captain in 1913, and was considered to be one of the ablest officers in the Brazilian Navy.
He was sent by the Brazilian Government to study electrical engineering in Belgium and America in 1905-1906, and in 1909 he was appointed Electrical Inspector of the Brazilian "Dreadnoughts" then building at Newcastle-on-Tyne and Barrow.
He died of influenza at Rio de Janeiro on the 24th October, 1918, after having been in poor health for over two years.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1913.
