Josef Božek ( Polish Józef Bożek) was born on 28 February 1782 at Béry/Biery (now Poland), and became an engineer. He died in Prague on 21 October 1835.

In 1815 he constructed a very early example of a steam car, which was demonstrated in Stromovka Park in Prague. A model of the car is displayed in Prague National Technical Museum (see photos).
