JOSEPH EDWARD NEEDHAM joined the technical staff of H.M. Patent Office in 1881, and had since advanced through the grades of assistant examiner, deputy examiner, and examiner, to that of senior examiner.

Whilst studying at the Oldham School of Science and Art he was awarded a scholarship which enabled him to attend day classes at Owens College, Manchester, and in 1878 he gained a Whitworth Scholarship.

He then served a three years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Platt Brothers and Company of Oldham.

From 1887 to 1894 he was lecturer in mechanical engineering subjects at the Birkbeck Institute, London.

His death occurred on 21st November 1928, in his seventy-second year.

He became a Member of the Institution in 1889.
