"JOSEPH ERNEST CECIL CARRICK throughout his career was in the service of the North Eastern Railway, both during its independent existence and after its absorption into the London and North Eastern Railway. After studying at Durham School, he began, in 1899, a four-year apprenticeship in the North Eastern Railway workshops at Gateshead and completed his education at the Company's Institute and the Durham Road School in Gateshead. He was next employed in the drawing office and subsequently filled positions as inspector in the electrical office, assistant foreman in the hydraulic department at Tyne Dock, and running shed foreman at Middlesbrough. In 1909 he entered the traffic department in which he continued to be employed for many years as yardmaster at various railway stations until his retirement. Mr. Carrick was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1902 and transferred to Associate Membership in 1910. His death, in his sixty-ninth year, occurred on 15th November 1950."
