From Graces Guide

Pioneer in the treatment of iron and the manufacture of steel.

Mr. Martien's took out various patents, the first on 23rd August, 1855, relating to "Improvements in preparing certain oxides of iron for use, and for apparatus to be used therein."

The second patent (5 September 1855) was for "improvements in roasting, calcining, oxydising, nod subliming metallic and mineral substances; and in the apparatus and means to effect the same."

The third patent (15th September 1855) was for "improvements in the manufacture of iron and steel."

The fourth patent(9th October 1855) was for "Improvements in the manufacture of iron and steel."

These were recognised as being close to those of Henry Bessemer but not as specific as to undermine Bessemer's claims.
