Mr. Joseph Lones, F.I.C., F.C.S., died at his residence in Vicarage Road, Smethwick, on February 4, 1942.
Mr. Lones received his early education at King Edward VI Grammar School, Five Ways, Birmingham.
On leaving there, he was apprenticed to the late Alexander E. Tucker, the first Public Analyst in the Midlands.
In order to qualify for the Fellowship of the Institute of Chemistry, he undertook a course of study at Mason's College, Birmingham, and in 1895 was successful in obtaining the F.I.C.
Mr. Lones then set up practice as an analytical and metallurgical chemist in Smethwick. A broadening of the scope of his work was made possible in 1902 by the award, after further study, of Diplomas in Therapeutics, Microscopy, and Pharmacology. Shortly afterwards he became Public Analyst to the Borough of Smethwick, a position he held until the time of his death.
Mr. Lones had been a member of the Institute since 1930.
