1845 Sale Notice: 'Important to Engravers, Calico Printers, &c — Sale of Exceedingly Valuable Machinery, Tools and Implements, for Engraving Copper Mills and Dies, Various Lathes, &c. &c. on the premises situate bottom of Hanover street, Long Millgate, Manchester.
Mr. J. W. SHAW, on Tuesday the 28th January instant, peremptorily, on the premises situated above, in consequence of Mr. Smith (late Joseph Smith and Son) having declined business:
The Whole of the truly Valuable and equal to new MACHINERY, &c. for Engraving Copper Rollers, comprising five very superior made, and in the finest possible condition, engraving machines, for straight rounds, bumping, and spirals, thoroughly complete for work; four exceedingly valuable eccentric machines, embracing every improvement, with considerable extras, very complete; very superior-made ruling-on machine, with two maundrills and indexes complete; and very excellent marking-on machine, with indexes. &c. complete; two pairs superior and very powerful clams, of the most modern construction, very complete; and one smaller ditto, and powerful punch-raising machine; five various-sized and most excellently made slide lathes, for turning up mills and dies, fitted with slide rests, &c; and two very superior small hand-lathes; and very valuable nine-inch double-geered slide-lathe, cast iron frame, 11 feet long, with slide rest, driving geering, &c for turning off copper rollers, or other purposes; three capital polishing lathes with maundrills, &c. complete; five 7-8 and 8 box maundrills; 9-8 forcing machine; iron and wood punch and mill blocks; and every variety of tools incidental to the business; and a choice and valuable assortment of mills and dies; softened steel and iron mill- ; stove pots and piping, cupboard and racks, grindstones, capital merlin scales and weights, and various other articles.
Mr. W. S. begs to direct the special attention of the trade to the above really very superior machinery; the whole being upon the very best and most approved construction, nearly new, quite complete for work, in the finest possible condition, and quite equal to any in the trade, the best proof being the superiority the work executed the establishment.
The sale will commence at half-past ten o'clock in the forenoon. The property may be viewed four days prior to the sale, when catalogues may be had on the premises; or earlier, on application to the auctioneer, 29, Princess street, Manchester. N.B. The PREMISES TO BE LET, with eight horses' steam power. Valuable Freehold Land, in Quay-street, Manchester.'[1]
