Joseph Sparkes (1776-1836)
Born the son of Thomas Sparkes who founded the general bank in Exeter in 1792.
They were a Quaker family and were active in the movement for the abolition of slavery and held the American Quaker William Penn, in high regard. With his brother and with his brother Thomas Joseph created the area of Exeter that they named Pennsylvania Park after Pennsylvania in America. They also used Penn’s image on their bank’s pound note.
