Born the son of Alfred Joseph Riley

1911 Living at Woodland House, Soothill, Batley: Alfred Joseph Riley (age 53 born Portsmouth), Master Boiler Maker and Repairer. With his wife Elizabeth, two daughters and son Joseph Sykes Riley (age 21 born Batley), Foreman Boiler Maker.[1]

1933 Married top Phyllis Thornton. 'Phyllis Thornton, only daughter of the Town Clerk of Leeds, and Mrs. Thomas Thornton, of Headingley. Miss Thornton, who is a violinist of no little skill and a golfer with a handicap which many may envy, is to marry Mr. Joseph Sykes Riley, a Batley business man. They met about fifteen months ago at the house of a mutual friend. Mr. Riley, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Joseph Riley, of Swiss House, Batley, is partner in his father’s boiler making firm and chairman of several other companies, Including an interest in the cinema industry.'[2]
