Joseph White (1801-1876)

1801 Born in Broadstairs, son of Thomas White and Elizabeth White. Baptised in Ramsgate[1]

1825 Baptism of son Joseph at West Cowes[2]

1827 Birth of daughter Caroline Ann White in West Cowes

1832 Built Waterwitch as a racing yacht of advanced, experimental design, achieving considerable success in this field.

Subsequently Mr. White built other brigs for the Royal Navy, notably the Daring. This vessel and the Waterwitch performed the best to windward in a strong wind and head sea in the experimental sailing of 1844. [3]

1841 "WHEREAS the Commissioners acting in the prosecution of a Fiat in Bankruptcy awarded and issued forth against Joseph White, of East Cowes, in the isle of Wight, in the county of Southampton, Ship Builder, Dealer and Chapman, have certified to the Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, and to the Court of Review in Bankruptcy, that the said Joseph White hath in all things conformed himself according to the directions of the Acts of Parliament made and now in force concerning bankrupts; this is to give notice, that, by virtue of an Act, passed in the sixth year of the reign of His late Majesty King George the Fourth, intituled " An Act to amend the laws relating to bankrupts ;" and also of an Act, passed in the first and second years of the reign of His late Majesty King William Fourth, intiuled " An Act to establish a Court in Bankruptcy," the Certificate of the said Joseph White will be allowed and confirmed by the Court of Review, established by the said last-mentioned Act, unless cause be shewn to the said Court to the contrary, on or before the 29th day of October 1841.[4]

1846 Built a schooner for the Emperor of Russia, which was named Queen Victoria[5]

1848 Designed the Phaeton, a 50-ton frigate, which was built at Deptford Dockyard[6]

1848 Death of his son Joseph white, junior, age 23.[7]

1851 Joseph White 49, ship builder employing 60 men and boys, lived in East Cowes, with Ann White 50, George H White 22, shipwright, Fred White 19, shipwright, Susan White 16, Spencer White 7[8]

1852-3 His name was mentioned (seemingly as credentials) in adverts for various commercial vessels, including those with voyages abroad[9]

1854 Bankruptcy proceedings.[10]

1861 Joseph White 60, formerly ship builder, lived in East Cowes, with Ann White 61[11]

1871 Joseph White 69, ship builder retired, lived in Cowes, with Anne White 71, Georg H White 42, ship builder.[12]

1876 Died in the Isle of Wight[13] 'At his residence, Providence Cottage, Prospect-road, West Cowes, Isle of Wight, after a long illness, Mr. Joseph White, aged 76.'[14]
