1883 Application to be Borough engineer of Portsmouth. 'Mr. Joseph William Brown, C.E., F.G.S., Town Surveyor of the Manor of Aston. Four years in the Borough Surveyor's Office, Bradford. Two years in the Borough Engineer's Office, Barrow-in-Furness. Three years Assistant Surveyor of the Corporation of Birmingham ; and for the last three and a half years Town Surveyor of the Manor of Aston. Age 35.'[1]
