JOSEPH WILLIAM SWITHINBANK was born in Leeds in 1863, and received his education at the local Grammar School and Mechanics' Institute and in various local engineering shops.

In 1881 he joined the National Telephone Co., and in 1887 became Local Manager for the Company in Huddersfield.

In 1890 he was transferred to Leeds, and was subsequently appointed District Manager at Durham, Hull, and Sheffield. During this period he was responsible for the survey and lay-out of several complete underground cable schemes, and for the equipment of a 3000-line Exchange.

He retained his position after the transfer of the telephones to the State until his retirement in 1923.

He died on 19th March 1926 at Sheffield.

Mr. Swithinbank became a Companion of this Institution in 1923.
