JULIUS STANKE, born at Neustadt, Moravia, on the 7th April, 1840, died at Rio de Janeiro on the 27th November, 1912.

Educated and trained in Vienna, he went to Brazil in 1863, where, from that year until 1899, he was engaged as engineer on the survey and construction of various railways, including the Dom Pedro 11, Recife-Sao Francisco, Paulo Affonso, Leopoldina, Sao Paulo and other lines. For some years he managed a match factory in Rio de Janeiro, where in 1900 he entered the service of the City Improvements Company, being District Engineer at the date of his death.

Mr. Stanke was elected a Member of The Institution on the 2nd February, 1897.
