1879 Sale Notice: SALE OFCOLLIERY PLANT..... at Kepier Winning Colliery, near Durham, the colliery plant, consisting of winding and pumping engines, fixed and loose plant, pumps, quadrant and tubular boilers, sinking and other gear, all of modern manufacture, together with six wooden colliery cottages, and joiners' tools, the property of Messrs Heckles and Musgrave, the owners of the colliery. There was a good attendance of colliery owners and brokers. The bidding throughout was rather brisk, but the prices obtained were below what was anticipated. Of the 140 lots submitted, the principal were the winding and pumping engines. A pair of polished 22in. cylinder horizontal engines, with 5ft. stroke, &c., and catalogued as excellent, with wall boxes and carriages complete, by Coupe, Wigan, Lancashire, were knocked down to Mr C. B. Bewick of Haydon Bridge for £300; and a pair of l2in. cylinder winding engines were purchased by Mr Coulson, Shamrock House, Durham, for £63. A 5 3/4in. cylinder engine, with double block motion bars, was secured by Mr Nicholas Ground, manager for Ferryhill Coal Company, for 10 guineas. The six wooden cottages were knocked down to Mr Lishman, Cathouse Colliery, Durham, for £11 7s. 6d. each.' [1]
