Professor L. Maunder, B.Sc., Ph.D., Sc.D. (Associate Member), obtained his degrees at the Universities of Wales and Edinburgh, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He served vacation apprenticeships with British Thomson Houston and Metropolitan Vickers.
In 1950 he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an Instructor and later became an Assistant Professor, lecturing in applied mechanics and conducting research on the bending of pre-twisted beams. He became a Group Leader at the Aeronautical Research Laboratory of the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and worked on problems of fatigue and kinetic heating.
In 1956 Professor Maunder returned to Britain to become a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, where he lectured and did research work on gyrodynamics and automatic control. He was appointed to the Chair of Applied Mechanics at King's College, University of Durham, in 1961. His publications include Gyrodynamics, with R. N. Arnold, and research papers on structures, vibration and gyrodynamics.
Professor Maunder became a Student of the Institution in 1946, a Graduate in 1950 and an Associate Member in 1961.
