The planing machine's table is operated by a crank whose stroke can be varied. The table is made to move towards the tool slowly and retract quickly to minimise 'dead time'. This is achieved by the pair of large eccentric elliptical gears. The tool is traversed by a ratchet mechanism worked by a system of links, driven by a cam beneath the eccentric gears. The amount of movement of the ratchet is adjustable
