Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway

of West George Street, Glasgow
1891 The line was authorised to connect the Caledonian Railway's system to shipyards, docks and factories on the north bank of the River Clyde. It was built to compete with the existing North British Railway's system. It also carried passenger services from Glasgow to Possil and Dumbarton and connected with the line to Balloch.[1]
1896 The line, which is nearly 18 miles in length, was opened for passenger traffic on October 1st, and is to be worked in perpetuity by the Caledonian Railway. [2]
The construction of the line was described extensively in Engineering in 1897.
On 16 August 1909 the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway was absorbed into the Caledonian Railway
1923 the Railway became part of LMS.
