1881 'The New Leadenhall Poultry Market was opened this morning by the Lord Mayor. The market is planned after the French style. It consists of two cross roads, one leading from Gracechurch-street into Lime-street, and the other running from Leadenhall-street into Lime-street. The entrance to the market in Gracechurch-street is of the German Renaissance style, and the other entrances are formed by pediments supported by Ionic columns. The central portion is supported by eight Ionic columns, and forms an irregular octagon, the altitude to the capilor being one hundred feet. The whole of the market is covered in, and is lighted and ventilated by glass louvres. The sanitary arrangements are complete. There is accommodation for about forty temants. The interior is tastefully decorated, great attention having been paid to the harmony of colour, the whole producing a lively effect. The decorations are combined French and German. The work was commenced in November last year, and was contracted for by Mr. Nightingale at a sum of £47,500. The plans were prepared by Mr. Horace Jones, the City Architect, and the whole of the carving, modelling, and sculpture have been executed by Messrs. Mabey, of Westminster. ....'[1]
