1900 The company was registered on 9 March, to take over certain collieries as a going concern. 
1904 'FLY-WHEEL AT PIT BURSTS. DRIVER'S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. A huge fly-wheel in the fanhouse of Bertie & Trevor's pits, of Merthyr Lewis Collieries, burst last night, wrecking the engine-house and damaging the engine. The driver, Thomas Prothero, amidst falling debris and hurtling fragments of the broken wheel, heroically stood to his post and shut off steam, thus averting worse consequences. He was badly cut on the head, and was unconscious when help came. His escape from death was miraculous It was fortunate that work had ceased and no one was on the pit bank, where pieces of broken wheel fell over a radius of fifty vards. As a result of the accident, between 1500 and 2000 miners will be idle.
