Limpley Stoke Viaduct

From Graces Guide
2021

Carries the A36 road across a valley at Limpley Stoke, near Bath.

1834 'The formation of the New Road from Bath to Warminster is rapidly proceeding; and it is expected that by April or May next it will be completed, and thrown open to the Public. The road will enter Bath by Pulteney Street. It will afford good trotting ground all the way; and will present a variety, in the picturesque beauty of the country through which it will pass, nowhere surpassed, and rarely equalled. The bridge (or viaduct) across the valley und brook between the Brass Knocker and Limpley Stoke Hills was commenced on the3d. of last June; and was finished on the 25th instant, —a period of little more than four months. The bridge consists of 11 arches, each of 21 feet span, and, including the guard walls, 38 feet high from the meadow: the road on the top is 33 feet wide; and the length of the bridge 340 feet. A committee of the Black Dog Turnpike Trust have closely inspected the work, and have pronounced that great praise is due to Mr. David Aust, the builder.'[1]

1878 'Immediate and costly repairs' required.
