The Association owes its inception to Edward Shrapnell Smith who called a meeting of motorists on the 26th October 1896 and David Salomons made the inaugural address.

Formed as a branch of the Self-Propelled Traffic Association with Alfred L. Jones as chairman

Lord Derby became the first President and was in that position in 1903. Shrapnell Smith had been the honorary secretary and resigned that position in 1902 to become the General Manager and secretary of the Road Carrying Co
