1849 Aug 10th. Explosion. 'A dreadful explosion occurred on Friday last in the colliery of Mr. W. Thomas, called the Lletty Shenkin Colliery, situate at Merdare, near Merthyr Tydfil, by which 51 persons engaged in the pit lost their lives. Although many of these unfortunate individuals were burnt to death, the greater part were suffocated by what is denominated the after-damp. Ten individuals were rescued from a premature grave, but were sadly injured.'[1] Eventual casualty count was 52 dead.
