Locomotive: Trotter
Locomotive for the Dundee and Newtyle Railway in 1834.
According to The Engineer - 1924/11/28, 'The Trotter' was put into service for the railway on March 2nd 1834. Archibald Sturrock after he had served his time with James Stirling and Co was employed by J. and C. Carmichael and helped to build The Trotter.[1].
However there was a letter to the editor of The Engineer by Mr F. W. Brewer stating the locomotive had a different origin. It reads below:-
"DUNDEE AND NEWTYLE RAILWAY LOCOMOTIVES - [2]
Sir,- In his twenty-second article on "One Hundred Years of British Railway" (November 28th -, p 604), your contributor states that three 0-2-4 locomotives of the "Earl of Airlie" type were built by Messrs Carmichael and Co. for the above mentioned railway i.e two in 1833 and one in 1834, the other engine being Lord Wharncliffe and the third the Trotter. I had a note to the same effect in one of my reference books, but, wishing to confirm the matter one way or the other as I had seen statements suggesting that merely two locomotives in all were turned out by Messrs. Carmichael, I wrote to that firm last year, asking them if they could give me any information on the point. In their reply they remarked: "You may take it from us there were only two locomotives built, namely, the Lord Wharncliffe and the Earl of Airlie, as all records go to prove this"
