M. Neal, BSc, DIC, MRAeS, was educated in mechanical engineering at University College London and in aeronautics at the City and Guilds College. After several years in the aircraft industry and associated Government departments, she joined the editorial staff of Engineering where she spent 10 years before becoming a freelance technical journalist, writing mainly on new materials and technology and aviation topics. Recently her interests have ranged from aerospace to the ocean—hovercraft, hydrofoils and sub-sea technology. She is Honorary Editor of the Proceedings of the Society for Underwater Technology.
