Manchester Liners



initially of 13 St. Ann Street, Manchester, later based in the imposing Manchester Liners House in Salford Docks.
1898 The company was registered on 3 May, to establish a line of steamships between Manchester and Canada. [1]. Manchester Liners was initially partly owned by Furness Withy, and became a subsidiary in 1970.
1968 The company switched from traditional to container shipping, but their ships were restricted to a maximum length of 530 feet (160 m) by the length of the lock chambers on the Manchester Ship Canal. No longer able to compete, they ceased operations in 1985.
