1884 Marks opened first stall at Leeds Market

1894 Marks invited Spencer to become a partner. Spencer, who managed the office and warehouse, and Marks, who continued to run the market stalls.

1901 Marks moved to the Birkenhead open market in North West England, amalgamating his business with Spencer's.

1903 They were allocated stall numbers 11 and 12 in the centre aisle; there they opened the penny bazaar.

1903 Registered as a limited company

1914 Acquired the London Penny Bazaar Co

1923 February 24th. The company left Birkenhead Market

1924 Moved head office from Manchester to London

1939 Owned 234 stores
