1951 'Men Dash Clear As 25-Ton Wheel Bursts. A chief engineer and his assistant escaped death yesterday when a 25-ton flywheel at the Marland Cotton Spinning Mill, Rochdale, flew from its moorings and burst into fragments. A huge hole was blown through the roof and another, 40 feet high 10 feet wide, in the wall. One piece of the wheel, weighing over 2 cwt., travelled 40 yards, and fragments broke windows 70 yards away. The whole machine room is now a mass of twisted metal and debris. The two engineers, Mr Tom Jones and his assistant, Mr William Thornton, were only few feet from the 1250 h.p. engine when they saw the wheel wobble, and dashed for safety. [2]
