Martin Cox ( -1927) of Mather and Platt

1928 Obituary [1]

MARTIN COX rose to the position of director of Messrs. Mather and Platt after commencing his career in a Lancashire cotton mill as a boy.

He became apprenticed, however, to a firm of plumbers, and in 1887 went to America for two years.

Upon returning to his native town of Bolton he established a small works of his own. This was unsuccessful and he joined Messrs. Dowson, Taylor and Company (later incorporated with Messrs. Mather and Platt) as a sprinkler erector. He was sent abroad as foreman in charge of the erection of sprinkler installations and in 1892 settled in Moscow as inspector of erection. Mr. Cox greatly extended his Russian interests and in 1907 was appointed general manager of Messrs. Mather and Platt's Russian business.

In 1917 he came to England and was made a director of the firm.

Mr. Cox became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1907 and his death occurred on 13th July 1927.
