1881 Residing at Half Moon Lane (North Side) (Thinford House): Matthew Coulson (age 50 born Hetton Le Hole), Iron Master Employing 142 Men & 22 Boys. With his wife Eleanor, son Harry and two daughters.[1]

1889 'DEATH OF MR. M. COULSON.- We regret to announce the death of Mr M. Coulson, of Mount Pleasant, Spennymoor, who died on Saturday night, after enduring great suffering. The deceased gentleman was born on February 24th, 1831, and in his youth was employed under his father who was an eminent mining engineer in the county of Durham. On the settlement of his family on the Continent, Mr Coulson remained in the fatherland with an uncle engaged in sinking operations in South Durham, and over twenty years ago undertook the management of the foundry at Spennymoor, and subsequently the Spennymoor Ironworks, which have become identified with his name. Deceased leaves a widow and two or three daughters and a son, who is at the Antipodes, Yesterday the foundry and works were idle.'[2]
