MATTHEW RUSSELL received his technical education at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, and served his apprenticeship, from 1886 to 1891, with Messrs. David Rowan and Sons. From 1891 to 1902 he acted as junior to the chief engineer of the British India Steam Navigation Company. He then went to Australia where he became chief engineer to the Kalgoorlie Electric Power Corporation and the Boulder Municipality.
On vacating those appointments in 1907 he returned to England and after a brief interval as chief engineer to Messrs. Hudson, Scott and Sons, Carlisle, he became surveyor to the London and Lancashire Fire Insurance Company, Ltd., with whom he remained until 1913, when he joined the staff of the Norwich Union Insurance Company, Ltd., as chief surveyor for Scotland and Ireland. After holding that position for four years he became chief engineer to the Glebe Sugar Refining Company, of Greenock, and in addition was consulting engineer to the Orchard Sugar Refining Company. For some six years subsequently he was associated with Messrs. John McNeil and Sons, sugar machinery engineers, of Govan, and visited India and the West Indies on the firm's behalf.
Mr. Russell, whose death occurred in his seventy-second year, on 27th June 1942, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1920.
