Matthias bought the mineral rights to a 250 acre estate, close to Hawne, and a further estate of 175 acres in 1806. The Attwood family's concerns in the West Midlands flourished in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. As a result, Matthias opened a bank in Birmingham, Spooner and Attwood, in 1791, in partnership with Isaac Spooner.

1817 Inherited a share in the flourishing business his father, George Attwood had built up, shared with his brother James Attwood.

Matthias son's included Charles Attwood and James Henry Attwood and Thomas Attwood.
