1883 'ILLEGAL EMPLOYMENT OF CHILDREN IN SALFORD. At the Salford Police Court this morning, several persons were summoned by Mr. C. C. W. Hoare, Government Inspector, for breaches of the Factory Act.— Messrs. Maybury, Marston, and Sharp, iron founders, Whit Lane, Pendleton, appeared to answer to two summonses for allowing two boys, named Abraham Burns and Peter Hewitt, to work during the night on the 11th, 13th, and 15th July. Mr. Hoare stated that the defendants admitted the offence, and their excuse was that they were uot aware that they were infringing the law, but the Factory Act expressly stated that, under no conditions, were children to be employed at night work. The boys were only twelve years of age. Defendants were fined £5 and costs, being 50s. in each case.'[2]
