Mazawattee Tea Co

c1850s John Boon Densham, a chemist, developed Mazawattee tea. It was presented as a way of sharing the restorative wonders of loose-leaf teas from India and Sri Lanka. In the Victorian era, Mazawattee Tea was sold under the motto “The Cup That Cheers, But Does Not Inebriate”.

Headquarters were established on Tower Hill.

1896 The company was registered May 18 to take over the businesses of the Mazawattee Ceylon Tea Co and of Messrs. Densham and Sons.

By 1898, the company was the largest tea company in the world, pioneering bold advertising campaigns.

The product range expanded beyond tea to chocolates, spices and cakes.

WWII The Tower Hill facilities and the New Cross factory were destroyed.
