of Hertford, brewers

1827 Peter McMullen, a Master Cooper by profession, started in business. He made barrels and casks for the 10 small brewing companies then in Hertford.

Soon after McMullen started brewing in an outhouse adjacent to his cooperage

Three years later built the Mill Bridge Brewery, a full scale commercial brewery.

1836 he bought his first pub, the Greyhound at Bengeo.

1891 a new brewery was built in the centre of Hertford; wells provided a supply of natural water for brewing.

1897 Company incorporated

1956 McMullen's of Hertford was set up as a subsidiary to hold and operate the pubs

Another subsidiary was G. B. Christie but this was dormant in 1976[1]

1984 Construction of a large new state of the art brewery.

Mid-1990s presented with the first Brewer of the Year award from the Parliamentary Beer Club.

2006 a new smaller brewery, the Whole Hop Brewery, was opened in the centre of Hertford.
