Melverley Bridge
near Melverley and Crew Green, west of Shrewsbury.
This light railway viaduct across the River Severn started life in 1871 as a cheap timber trestle viaduct, underwent stages of repair and rebuilding, finally becoming a steel trestle structure. It was originally built for the Potteries, Shrewsbury and North Wales Railway.
The timber structure collapsed in 1902.
In 1907 Colonel Stephens formed the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Railway and rebuilt the viaduct using reclaimed girders. It was seriously damaged by ice floes in 1940 and was hastily rebuilt to transport quarried roadstone. The bridge was rebuilt in 1948 by A. G. Farr under the direction of the BR Western Region. It now serves as a road bridge.
