M. J. Neale BSc(Eng), WhSch, DIC, Member, served an engineering apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce Ltd, Derby between 1944-50 and took a part-time degree course at Derby Technical College. Between 1951-54 he worked on piston ring lubrication at Imperial College, London, then moved to the Glacier Metal Co Ltd where for three years he was Manager of the engineering research department. This was followed by four years as Manager, Bearing Design Department.

Mr Neale serves on a number of IMechE committees and was chairman of the Tribology Group in 1970 and 1971 and of the committee responsible for the production of Engineering Sciences Data Items in Tribology. He edited Tribology Handbook and is chairman of the Association of Consulting Scientists. He is senior partner of Michael Neale and Associates, consultants specialising in Tribology and failure investigation.
