1943 Contract to design and produce a supersonic aircraft was awarded
1946 February the prototype of the M.52 was almost ready but the contract was cancelled by the Ministry following the discovery of German research on swept-back wings. This would have been the world's first supersonic jet aircraft. All the technical data were sent to NASA and is believed to have influenced the design of the Bell X-1.

- The Miles M52 was to be powered by the Whittle W2/700 engine with an augmentor and afterburner, giving 4000 lbf thrust. The engine is on display at Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry.
