Milford Haven Bridge

From Graces Guide

A "box-girder" bridge near Milford Haven, crossing the Cleddau River on seven spans, 820 metres long.

1965 Permission was granted for the bridge

1967 Work started; Freeman Fox and Partners were the structural design engineers.

1969 Construction started

1970 One of the spans collapsed during construction. 4 workmen were killed and 5 injured. Subsequent simulation by engineers at British Aircraft Corporation suggested that the load on the strengthening diaphragms in the boxes could have been twice their buckle strength.[1]

In its 1973 report, a subsequent inquiry outlined 27 recommendations, establishing new standards for the design and construction of box-girder bridges.

1972 Work restarted when the first of the new box units to replace those damaged was erected.

1975 The bridge opened
